National Testing Agency (NTA), the conducting body for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main has updated its exam pattern for entrance to BE/B Tech, B Plan, and B Arch courses.
Students aspiring for a BE/B Tech course have to give JEE Main Paper 1, while those who want to pursue a B Plan or B arch course have to give JEE Main Paper 2. JEE Main Paper 2 will now be conducted separately for B Plan and B Arch Courses.
Exam Pattern for BE / B Tech Aspirants (JEE Main Paper 1)
JEE Main Paper 1 consists of 3 sections, divided subject-wise into Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Unlike JEE Advanced, JEE Main has a fixed exam pattern every year. Each subject section has a total of 25 questions, with 20 Objective Type (MCQ) questions and 5 Numerical Value questions.
- Every Objective Type question yields +4 marks for a correct answer, -1 marks for an incorrect answer, and unattempted questions are not marked.
- Every Numerical Value question yields +4 marks for a correct answer, and no marks are deducted for unattempted questions or wrong answers.
- Paper 1 has a maximum of 300 marks as per the new 2020 JEE Main exam pattern
- JEE Main 2020 Paper 1 will be conducted exclusively in a 3-hour Computer Based Test (CBT) Mode.
Exam Pattern for B Arch / (JEE Main Paper 2)
This year, NTA has updated the pattern of the JEE Main exam for B Arch/B Plan aspirants. Now, the entrance examination for B Arch and B Plan is conducted separately, with Paper 2 for B Arch and Paper 3 for B Plan.
- JEE Main Paper 2 consists of 3 sections, namely Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing Test.
- The Mathematics section consists of a total of 25 questions, with 20 Objective Type (MCQ) questions and 5 Numerical Value questions. In this section, a correct answer will give you +4 marks, while a wrong answer gives -1 marks.
- The Aptitude Test section has 50 Objective Type (MCQ) questions, and the Drawing Test section consists of 2 Drawing related questions.
- According to the updated JEE Main exam pattern, the paper 2 will be conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) Mode, with an exception that the Drawing test will be held in “Pen and Paper” (Offline) Mode.
Exam Pattern for B Plan Aspirants (JEE Main Paper 3)
- JEE Main Paper 3 is for those students who wish to pursue a B Plan course, and NTA has updated the pattern of this paper in 2020.
- This year onwards, JEE Main Paper 3 will consist of 3 sections, namely Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Planning Based Questions.
- The Mathematics section consists of a total of 25 questions, with 20 Objective Type (MCQ) questions and 5 Numerical Value questions. In this section, a correct answer will give you +4 marks, while a wrong answer gives -1 marks.
- In a similar exam pattern like Paper 2, Aptitude Test section has 50 Objective Type (MCQ) questions, and in this section as well, a correct answer will give you +4 marks while incorrect answer yields -1 marks.
- NTA has changed the third section of JEE Main Paper 3 to include 25 Planning based MCQs, with a marking scheme similar to MCQs in other sections as well.
- A student can give all three papers for JEE Main.

JEE Main 2020 Exam Pattern Highlights
- NTA has updated the Pattern for JEE Main in 2020. JEE Main will now have 3 papers, separate papers will now be conducted for BE/B Tech, B Arch and B Plan
- Paper for BE/B Tech courses will now have 25 questions each for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. 20 of these questions are MCQs, while 5 are Numerical Value questions, which have a numerical answer. NVQs do not have negative marking.
- NTA has also decided to include 25 Planning related questions in Paper 3, for B Plan aspirants. These questions will be asked instead of the “Pen and Paper” drawing test.
What is the Pattern of JEE Mains exam?
The Paper I of the JEE Main 2020 examination consists of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 numerical value questions for each subject (Maths, Physics, and Chemistry), i.e., a total of 75 questions. Candidates will be given 3 hours to complete the paper
What is the Marking Scheme ?
For every correct answer, 4 marks will be awarded. There is a penalty for the wrong attempt and as a result, 1/4th marks will be deducted. No negative marking in numerical questions
Can a average student crack JEE Main?
